The South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) has demanded the immediate release of several boats seized by armed groups in Jonglei and Unity States.
The hijackings, which involved both UN and privately-owned
vessels Fangak and Leer Counties, have escalated insecurity along the country’s
waterways.
In a statement on Friday, SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang condemned the actions allegedly carried out by SPLA-IO and White Army fighters, who are reportedly demanding ransoms ranging from SSP 10 million to $50,000.
“Reliable and credible intelligence coupled with complaints
received from various entities indicated that several barges and boats
including one belonging to United Nations and another owned by a Sudanese
businessman had been hijacked by SPLA-IO fighters and the White Army in Fangak
and Leer Counties of Jonglei and Unity States respectively,” Ruai said.
“In a blatant violation of passengers and business owner’s
rights, passengers on hijacked boats were ordered to disembark and told to find
alternative means of reaching their final destinations.”
The most extensive incident reportedly took place at Adok
Baar Port, where at least eight boats transporting passengers and commercial
goods were commandeered.
Ruai stated that the hijackers are demanding ransom payments
ranging from SSP 10 million to $50,000, depending on various factors.
He described the acts as piracy, warning that the disruption
to river transport could prompt military retaliation.
“In light of inconveniences caused, SSPDF Chief of Defense
Forces, Gen. Dr. Paul Majok Nang. hereby orders for immediate and unconditional
release of all hijacked barges and boats. Failure to comply with these
operational orders will result in taking of punitive aerial and riverine
actions,” he added.
